Enchanting mountain villages with tradition and history, perfect for unique Christmas getaways.
Our thoughts turn to vacation time. Only a few weeks remain until the holiday season, and we're deep into planning mode. Many have already arranged their next getaway, while others are last-minute planners and are just now choosing their destination. Whatever the case, Greece has dozens of beautiful winter destinations, each hiding its own beauty, each with its own ace up its sleeve.
At the same time, in these destinations we find quality hotels with high-level services, some with spas, others with stunning views, indoor pools, restaurants with delicious food. And all of this across a wide price range, able to satisfy various budgets. We've selected and present to you five such interesting destinations that generate significant traveler interest.
Arachova: Greece's Most Cosmopolitan Mountain Village
Here you'll find the largest and among the best-organized ski centers in our country. Just below you'll encounter the settlement of Arachova, which is Greece's most cosmopolitan mountain village. It's stone-built and traditional, while at the same time synonymous with entertainment, before and after skiing. In the area you'll find excellent guesthouses and resorts with wonderful suites, villas, jacuzzis, and spas. A walk through the cobblestone streets will bring you face to face with the village's rich past, and it's worth walking and admiring Ai-Giorgis and the famous Clock Rock, which locals call Kabanario. Near Arachova, you'll visit a beautiful plateau, Livadi, where among other things you can choose to do activities like horseback riding or ATV rides.
Pelion: Where Mountain Meets Sea
We can easily rank Pelion among the most popular tourist destinations, having the privilege of playing strongly as both a winter and summer destination. The ideal combination between mountain and sea, along with beautiful villages with stunning views and picturesque stone mansions combined with iconic squares, make a visit special. Pelion's 24 picturesque villages with their beauty stand ready to satisfy everyone. If all this is combined with the region's rich gastronomic tradition, then truly we can talk about something special.
Palaios Agios Athanasios: Gateway to Kaimaktsalan
A settlement that has truly become synonymous with winter vacations as every year it becomes a tourist magnet. A meeting point especially for Thessalonians, Palaios Agios Athanasios has transformed into a cosmopolitan settlement, with hotels, restaurants, bars, cafes, and tourist shops flooded with visitors, especially on weekends and holidays. About 15 kilometers from the settlement is the Kaimaktsalan ski center, which works to strengthen tourist attraction.
Elati and Pertouli: The Koziakas Forest Experience
We take a stroll on the slopes of Koziakas, an iconic mountain of Thessaly and the easternmost of the Pindos mountain range. We enjoy the view of green slopes filled with fir trees and explore an area that hides unique secrets of nature. We leave Trikala behind and, passing right by the settlement of Pyli with its famous bridge, we enter the special universe of Elati and Pertouli. We drive for an hour through forests, relaxing and enjoying the moments. A stop in Elati for hot chocolate and next destination the ski center in Pertouli for snow activities, or depending on the season, for hiking through nature.
Elatochori: Wild Mountain Beauty
It stands out for its wild mountain beauty and is an ideal excursion point for those seeking moments of relaxation and tranquility. Walks on trails, incomparable views, unique nature. All this and so much more stand ready to transform a visit into a true experience indelibly etched in memory. In the old settlement, which was destroyed in 1944 by the Germans, is the church of Agios Nikolaos, which dates to the 17th century. It has an amazing wood-carved iconostasis that's worth admiring up close. The modern village is built a bit lower and has become a meeting point for all those who love nature activities, as this is the starting point for many activities. At the same time, the Elatochori ski center is another reason to come here.
Common Questions
How do I get here from Athens?
Most destinations covered on this site are 2 to 4 hours from Athens by car. I always recommend renting a car rather than joining a bus tour — you control your stops, you can pull over when something looks interesting, and the drive itself is often half the experience in Greece.
What is the best time to visit?
April to June is my personal preference — the wildflowers are out, the crowds haven't arrived, and the light is extraordinary. September and October are equally good. Summer is beautiful but you'll share it with everyone else. Winter is underrated and deeply local.
