Aegean Memories Through the Lens of Konstantinos Sofikitis

The sea and its islands hide countless human stories waiting to be told By food journalist Dimitris Stathopoulos.

The sea and its islands hide countless human stories waiting to be told. Distinguished photographer Konstantinos Sofikitis chooses to become their narrator, presenting at the Piraeus Municipal Gallery a collection capturing the soul of the island world.

From June 1-3, 25 photographic works reveal the pulse of everyday life in the Aegean islands. The project titled "Historiography in the Aegean" isn't limited to visual documentation. It combines sound, text, and personal testimonies, creating a document of island culture.

Konstantinos Sofikitis, a member of the renowned LensCulture Society, brings to Greece the experience from his collaboration with National Geographic. The international recognition of his work, from the gold distinction at the Sony World Photography Awards to his presence at the Venice Biennale, confirms his artistic maturity.

This exhibition proposal is part of "Sea Days," the cultural festival organized by the Municipality of Piraeus. Through the islanders' portraits, professional activities and social practices at risk of being lost in time emerge. Each photograph functions as a window into a world where tradition meets contemporary reality.

The exhibition opens Saturday, June 1 at 7 pm, with free admission. Visitors will have the opportunity to discover Sofikitis's aesthetic, which focuses on photography's human dimension, recording emotions and experiences transcending geographical boundaries.

Address: Piraeus Municipal Gallery, Filonos 29, Piraeus
