In the heart of mountainous Drama, hidden among dense vegetation, lies one of the area's most impressive natural treasures: the Agia Barbara waterfall. Our journey began from Paranesti, heading north toward Arkoudorema with the valuable company of experienced Sofia Kementzetidou. After 7 kilometers, at the Prasinada junction, we followed the straight road toward Dipotama. At 6 kilometers, a right turn brought us to the trail's starting point.
The Journey Begins
Leaving the car on the public road, just before the Dipotama settlement, a simple but clear sign showed us the beginning of the trail. We crossed a small bridge and began our uphill journey. The trail, easy and accessible, extends for about 1.5 kilometers total, including the return.
As we progressed, nature revealed its secrets to us. We passed by an abandoned cafe, a silent witness to passing time. The stream waters flowed calmly, with only a few points testifying to their power. At certain points, our ears filled with the sounds of wildlife as we heard the characteristic calls of deer, adding a note of mystery to our adventure.
An Unexpected Guide
Suddenly, a friendly dog appeared from nowhere, determined to become our guide on this small walking route. With our four-legged companion leading the way, we continued our journey toward the imposing waterfall.
The Agia Barbara waterfall, with a height of over 15 meters, stands proudly, surrounded by rich vegetation of maples and oaks. Its waters, coming from Barbara stream, form a small lake at its base. Here, nature creates a small ecosystem, hosting trout, freshwater crabs, water snakes, and colorful dragonflies.
A Recreation Space
The area, developed by the Forest Service as a recreation space, offers an escape option for nature lovers, families, and excursionists. From the top of the waterfall, the view toward the lake is magical, offering unique opportunities for panoramic photographs. The carved rocks create a unique image worth seeing from above as well. Reaching the waterfall, you'll need to follow the left path and thus you'll find yourself at its high point.

As our day came to its end, our faithful dog-guide accompanied us back to our starting point. Saying goodbye to this small wonder of nature, we felt grateful for the experience and renewed by contact with the wild beauty of mountainous Drama. The Agia Barbara waterfall remains a treasure, ready to enchant every visitor who dares to explore the beauties of the area.
