A Photo Safari in the Heart of Pindos

Photographer Konstantinos Sofikitis selects 10 photographs from a place that keeps its essence unchanged.

There are places that resist time. Places that, despite the continuous flow of seasons, maintain their essence unchanged. Pindos is such a place. Here, on the steep slopes of Baros and Verliga, time seems to flow at a different pace, following the slow step of mules on the cobblestone paths and the sun that colors the mountain peaks.

For almost a week, we wandered in these parts, seeking the moments where light, landscape, and human presence compose a unique narrative. From the dozens of photographs taken, ten were selected that compose a visual diary of this wandering.

The Quality of Light

"When you arrive in Pindos," says Sofikitis, "the first thing that strikes you is the light. It's different here. Clearer, more intense. Every hour of the day has its own color palette. Dawn brings soft pinks and oranges that slide onto the slopes, midday light is hard and revealing, while dusk... dusk is magical. The shadows of the mountains spread like ink in the valleys, while the last rays of sun gild the peaks."

His photographs capture this alternation of light, but also the eternal coexistence of the imposing with the everyday. The winding road that climbs the slopes seems like a thin thread sewn onto the mountain. The elderly ladies chatting on the balcony, with firewood stacks and clothespins in the background, is an image that could be from any decade of the past century.

The Balance of Nature and Humanity

"What fascinated me most," continues the photographer, "is how nature and man have found a balance here. The stone houses seem to sprout from the rock, as if they were always there. The paths follow the natural curves of the ground. Even the animals (the mules standing proudly at the edge of the cliff with the sunset as a backdrop) are an integral part of this landscape."

"Each photograph I chose tells a different piece of the story of Tzoumerka. There is the majesty of the mountains, but also the intimacy of small moments. There is the loneliness of the peaks, but also the warmth of human presence. I wanted to show that this place is not simply an impressive backdrop; it's a living organism that breathes, changes, and simultaneously remains the same."

A Timeless Journey

This journey is a reminder that there are still places where time flows at a different pace. Places where the past is not a distant memory but a living presence that coexists harmoniously with the present. The images are not simply recordings of a landscape; they are portraits of a place that continues to tell its own story, in its own unique way.
