The Greek countryside reveals its winter wealth through a mosaic of activities

From the magical sunset at Meteora with electric bikes to exploring Zagori's stone bridges, and from Parnonas' oak forest to Messolonghi's lagoon, the options are many and distinctive. Experienced organizers offer guided excursions that combine adventure with safety, giving nature lovers the opportunity to discover some of our country's most impressive corners during the winter period.

An exciting hiking experience in Parnonas' heart awaits nature lovers on January 19, 2025. The "Oak Path," part of the Caryatides Trails routes, offers a unique opportunity to explore one of Greece's most impressive oak forests. The route, 3.6 miles long with a mild elevation gain of 350 meters, is accessible to hikers of all levels. The trail crosses an impressive vegetation mosaic, where oaks dominate, while chestnuts, walnuts, and firs coexist. The route's undisputed highlight is the historic oak of Ai Thanasis, which according to local tradition is considered the mother of all Parnonas oaks.

The program starts early in the morning with gathering at 7:15 at the Agios Antonios metro station in Peristeri, Athens. The hike begins at 10:30, while at 2:00 PM a stop for food and rest is scheduled. Return to Athens is scheduled for 7:30 PM. The participation cost of €35 per person includes bus transport, experienced hiking guides, a fitness trainer, guided tour with area stories, and all safety measures. The organization is signed by "Fasi einai Mountains."

Messolonghi, known mainly for its historical heritage, offers a series of authentic activities that highlight its natural and cultural diversity. At the Klisova lagoon, kayak trips allow visitors to tour among channels crossing calm waters, offering direct contact with the marine ecosystem. Of particular interest is interaction with fishermen who insist on utilizing traditional techniques, as well as the pelades (old huts) that are an integral part of local tradition. Passing to Mount Arakynthos' oak forest, archery in a natural environment full of centuries-old trees offers a distinctive contact with nature, combining mental calm and athletic activity.

The more active can choose mountain biking, with marked trails suitable for all difficulty grades. From lower routes, where the lagoon unfolds impressively, to the more demanding ones for experienced cyclists, Arakynthos offers a complete exploration experience. As part of a broader effort for sustainable development, the area's organizations emphasize low environmental disturbance. For this reason, activities are conducted mainly with non-motorized means and accompanied by information about protecting the sensitive ecosystem. Finally, gastronomy in nature completes the experience, as local products and lagoon fish are cooked with respect for the environment, keeping their authentic aroma intact and presenting Greek outdoor hospitality in the best way.

At Pertouli Ski Center, activity options are varied and address both beginners and more advanced nature lovers. If you're friends of skiing or snowboarding, you can explore different difficulty slopes, enjoying safe, exciting descent on snow-covered slopes. Those who prefer something different have the opportunity to drive snowmobiles, following specially marked routes through the fir forests, or to rent ATVs and experience ultimate adventure in the mountain's heart.

For horse riding lovers, trained and calm horses await, so you can cross green meadows and surrender to mountain landscape's magic. At the same time, you can try your luck at archery, a pleasant challenge that will bring you into contact with nature. Finally, mountain hiking or biking fans have scenic trails at their disposal, which highlight this mountain's hidden beauties and promise unforgettable moments of relaxation. Additionally, a chalet operates in the area, where you can enjoy beverages and snacks, regaining strength before continuing with your activities.

In Greece's heart, where ancient monasteries balance seemingly suspended on towering sandstone rocks, a unique adventure awaits visitors to Meteora. The sunset electric bike tour offers an enchanting way to discover this UNESCO World Heritage monument, combining modern technology with timeless natural beauty. Starting from picturesque Kalambaka, small groups of up to eight people set out with electrically assisted bikes, under certified local guides' guidance. The three-hour route crosses what locals call the "stone forest" (a landscape of massive rocky formations that seem to defy gravity, crowned with centuries-old monasteries that appear to float between earth and sky).

What makes this tour special is its carefully timed conclusion at Meteora's best viewing point. In the afternoon of the 15th of August, at the hour when the sun begins to sink into the Aegean, participants gather at a strategic observatory to witness what many describe as a "magical moment" (the golden sunset light painting the ancient rocks and monasteries in ethereal shades). "It's a life experience you have to see to believe," notes one of the tour's organizers. The experience is accessible to riders of various fitness levels thanks to electric bikes, which are equipped with safety features, including lights and helmets with rear lighting.

In Epirus' heart, a magical hiking route reveals Zagori's hidden treasures. Starting from the picturesque village of Kipoi, walkers have the opportunity to discover some of the region's most impressive examples of traditional architecture. The three-hour route, running from 10:00 to 1:00 PM, includes visits to emblematic 17th and 18th-century bridges. The single-arch Pistionis bridge, the Mill bridge, and the imposing three-arch Plakidas bridge stand as living witnesses to old masters' architectural skill.

The route leads to the traditional village of Koukouli, where visitors have the unique opportunity to visit the Lazaridis Folklore Museum. The museum, housed in founder Kostas Lazaridis' house, hosts an impressive collection of the Vikos region's rare flora. Here, visitors can learn about the "Vikogiatra" tradition and discover the area's therapeutic herbs' secrets. The route completes with descent of the picturesque "Koukouli Stairway," returning to the starting point at Kipoi. The meeting point is at Lazaridis Bridge, in Central Zagori, where hikers gather to begin this unique tour through the area's history and natural beauty. This hiking route offers a complete experience combining cultural heritage, architectural tradition, and Zagori's natural beauty, highlighting why the region is one of Greece's most popular hiking destinations.
